Our wedding planning do’s and don’ts…
The overall goal for a bride and her groom is to honor their love in front of friends and family, and with all the many aspects of a wedding the last thing you’ll want to do is worry about them. Truth be told, there always seems to be a little something here and a little something there that wasn’t completely perfect, but with these few tips, I hope to make it all much easier based off of what I know.
With running and designing both LulaKate, Kate McDonald Bridal, and Kate McDonald Maids, and now also sharing the fun of Big Day Best Friends, a day-of styling service with my mother, there have definitely been a few things I’ve picked up and learned along the way.
We were also very excited to work with The WeddingWire, who provided this wonderful infographic below to help with the timeline of planning your wedding. . If you’re in need of wedding venue ideas, take a look at these popular locations in Charleston. I hope you find both their layout and my own tips helpful!

Our Wedding Planning Dos and Don’ts
1.) Honest & True Referrals
– Ask your friends who they used for their own wedding. What did they like or not like about the person/company?
*Word of mouth is so important these days and on both sides of the aisle! Your friends would certainly love to help and getting that first person explanation of their experience with a certain vendor can sometimes make all the difference in the world.
2. Two Peas In A Pod (Maybe Three!)
– Make sure you like the personality of the most important vendors.
*Your pictures will be the the most important item from your Wedding Day. Make sure you and your photographer get along and have a meeting before the wedding with a checklist of “Must Have” pictures from the weekend. Give the list to your Maid of Honor the day of the wedding so she can help the photographer remember.
3. Your Unique Personality
– Choose things that you and your fiancée like, not what other people are telling you to do.
*Remember that this is your wedding and it should fit your personalities and personality as a couple. You and your fiancé are unique and that’s amazing! Honor your union and be true to yourselves. There will be so many decisions to make, and while advice and suggestions from friends and family are indeed helpful, no one is you and your soon to be spouse!
4. Always Something New
– Once you have made a decision about your dress or venue, try to stay off Pinterest / Instagram.
*There are so many choices these days that you will drive yourself nuts second guessing yourself. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is that you have found someone that you love and loves you and you want to spend the rest of your life together.
All in all, your wedding day is a day to celebrate your love and make vows of life together. With just a few essential steps, you can be sure to have a wedding both beautiful and meaningful. Check out The Wedding Wire’s helpful infographic too for more tips for your wedding planning pleasure!
